Why Study in the UK? Top Reasons for Indian Students

The United Kingdom is home to some of the world’s most prestigious universities, offers shorter degree durations that reduce total costs, and provides the Graduate Route — a post-study work visa that lets you work anywhere in the UK for up to 2 years after graduation, with no job offer needed.

🏛️
World-Ranked Universities

4 UK universities in the global top 10 — Oxford (#3), Cambridge (#5), Imperial (#8), UCL (#9). 30+ rank in the global top 200.

⏱️
Shorter Degrees = Lower Total Cost

3-year Bachelors and 1-year Masters mean one fewer year of tuition and living costs compared to the USA or Australia.

💼
Graduate Route — 2 Years Work

Stay and work anywhere in the UK for 2 years after Bachelor’s/Masters (3 years for PhD). No job offer or employer sponsorship needed.

🌍
Globally Recognised Degree

A UK degree is respected by employers in India, USA, Canada, Singapore and worldwide. The British university system is a global benchmark.

🤝
Large Indian Community

1.8 million+ people of Indian origin in the UK. Cities like London, Leicester, and Birmingham have thriving Indian communities.

🏥
NHS Healthcare Access

Student visa holders pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (£776/year) and gain comprehensive NHS healthcare access — no per-visit charges.

🎯 IMFS Tip: The UK’s 1-year Masters is a major financial advantage — you save a full year of living expenses vs. a 2-year US Masters. For students focused on the Graduate Route career pathway, the UK is a very strong option. Talk to an IMFS counsellor to compare UK vs other destinations — book a free session here.

Eligibility & Exams Required to Study in the UK

For Masters / Postgraduate Programs

  • Bachelor’s degree with minimum 55–65% or 6.0/10 CGPA (varies by university)
  • IELTS Academic: minimum 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) — OR TOEFL iBT: 90+
  • GRE/GMAT: required by some programs (MBA typically requires GMAT)
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation (LORs)
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP)
  • Updated CV / Resume
  • Official academic transcripts
  • Proof of funds (maintenance requirements as above)

For Bachelor’s Programs (UCAS)

  • Class 12 (10+2) with minimum 70–80%
  • IELTS minimum 6.0–6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80+
  • Apply via UCAS — the UK’s centralised undergraduate application system — up to 5 university choices per application
  • Some programs require additional tests: LNAT (Law), BMAT (Medicine), SAT (some US-style courses)

English Language — 2026 Update

⚠️ From January 2026: The UK has strengthened English language requirements for student visas. Most applicants must demonstrate CEFR Level B2 across all four skills through an approved SELT (Secure English Language Test) such as IELTS Academic UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI. Some applicants may be exempt if prior education was in English — confirm with your specific university. IMFS coaches you to the exact IELTS score your target universities require.

📝 UCAS for Undergrad: Unlike the USA where you apply to each university separately, UK undergrad applications all go through UCAS — one application form, up to 5 university choices, one personal statement. IMFS guides you through the full UCAS process including shortlisting, personal statement writing, and deadline management.

UK Student Visa Process — Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

The UK Student Visa (formerly Tier 4) is processed through UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration). Here’s the complete step-by-step process for Indian applicants:

  • Step 1: Receive Your CAS from the University

Once you accept your offer and meet all conditions, your UK university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) — a unique reference number that is the foundation of your visa application. You cannot apply for a student visa without a valid CAS.

  • Step 2: Prepare Maintenance Funds Documentation

You must hold £1,529/month in London or £1,171/month outside London (for up to 9 months) plus your first year’s tuition fee — all in your bank account for 28+ consecutive days. Bank statements, scholarship letters or education loan sanction letters are accepted as evidence.

  • Step 3: Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

The IHS must be paid as part of your visa application. For students, the rate is £776 per year of visa duration (at the reduced student rate). A 1-year Masters typically costs £1,164 total IHS (1 year + 6 extra months). A 3-year Bachelor’s costs approximately £2,716 total. Payment is online, upfront, in full — no instalments. This grants you full NHS access during your stay.

  • Step 4: Apply Online via UKVI — Pay Visa Fee

Submit your Student Visa application online at gov.uk/student-visa. Visa application fee: £524. Required documents: CAS number, valid passport, maintenance evidence, IELTS/TOEFL certificate, academic transcripts, IHS payment receipt. Priority service (5-day processing) is available for an additional £990.

  • Step 5: Biometrics at a Visa Application Centre (VAC)

After submitting your online application, book a biometrics appointment at a VAC in India (HDFC Bank VAC locations across major cities). Give fingerprints and photo. Book early — slots fill up fast during peak seasons (July–September).

  • Step 6: Receive Your e-Visa

From July 2025, the UK has fully moved to digital e-Visas — replacing all physical vignette stickers and BRPs (Biometric Residence Permits). Your visa status is held digitally. You’ll use a share code to prove your right to study and work to employers and landlords. Standard processing from India typically takes 3–6 weeks after biometrics.

⚠️ Note on IHS rates: The standard IHS rate for non-student visas is £1,035/year. Students get the reduced rate of £776/year. The Graduate Route visa (post-study work) uses the standard rate: £1,035/year — so a 2-year Graduate Route costs £2,070 in IHS. Always use the official IHS calculator on gov.uk to confirm your exact amount before applying.

🛂 Dependants (from January 2024): Only PhD/research-level students (and government-sponsored scholars) can bring dependants (spouse/partner and children) to the UK under the Student Route. Taught Masters and Bachelor’s students cannot bring dependants — this is a major planning consideration if you have a family.

Work While Studying & Graduate Route Visa (Post-Study Work)

Work Rights During Your Studies

As a UK student visa holder studying at a licensed degree-level institution, you are permitted to work:

  • Up to 20 hours per week during academic term time
  • Full-time (unlimited hours) during official university holiday periods (summer, Christmas, Easter breaks)
  • For any employer — on or off campus — no separate work permit required
  • Self-employment and freelance work are NOT permitted on a student visa (including remote/online freelancing)
  • Employers must conduct a Right to Work check using your digital e-Visa share code before you start work

🇬🇧 Graduate Route Visa — The UK’s Post-Study Work Visa

The Graduate Route is one of the most powerful advantages of studying in the UK. After graduating from an approved UK university, you can stay and work — in any role, for any employer — without needing a job offer to apply:

  • Bachelor’s and Masters graduates: 2 years to work or look for work at any skill level
  • PhD / Doctoral graduates: 3 years to work or look for work
  • No job offer needed to apply for the Graduate Route
  • No employer sponsorship required — apply directly from inside the UK before your Student visa expires
  • The Graduate Route cannot be extended — you must switch to another visa (e.g. Skilled Worker) before it expires to remain in the UK
  • IHS for Graduate Route: £1,035/year (standard rate) — 2-year visa costs £2,070; 3-year visa costs £3,105

⚠️ Important Change from 1 January 2027: For Bachelor’s and Masters graduates who apply for the Graduate Route on or after 1 January 2027, the post-study stay reduces from 2 years to 18 months. PhD graduates are not affected and continue to receive 3 years. This change was confirmed in the UK Government’s Immigration White Paper (May 2025). Students currently enrolled or starting before this date may benefit from transitional protections — IMFS counsellors will confirm the exact rules applicable to your intake date.

💡 Graduate Route → Skilled Worker pathway: Many Indian students use their Graduate Route period to gain UK work experience, then switch to a Skilled Worker visa sponsored by their employer. This builds towards Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR / permanent residency). IMFS advises students on this career and immigration roadmap from Day 1 of counselling.

Frequently Asked Questions — Study in the UK

The UK offers world-renowned universities (4 in the global top 10), shorter degree durations (1-year Masters, 3-year Bachelors), the Graduate Route post-study work visa (2 years), globally recognised qualifications, NHS healthcare access, and one of the largest Indian diaspora communities in the world. The combination of academic prestige, English language, and post-study work rights makes the UK a top destination for Indian students.
For most Masters programs: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. For top universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial): IELTS 7.0+ is typically required. For Bachelors: IELTS 6.0–6.5. From January 2026, the UK student visa now requires CEFR Level B2 (broadly equivalent to IELTS 5.5+) as a minimum for visa eligibility — but university admission requirements are generally higher. IMFS recommends targeting IELTS 7.0 for stronger applications at Russell Group universities. IELTS Coaching at IMFS →
The Graduate Route is the UK’s post-study work visa. After graduating from an approved UK university, you can stay and work (at any skill level, for any employer) for 2 years (Bachelor’s / Masters) or 3 years (PhD). No job offer or employer sponsorship is needed to apply. You apply from inside the UK before your Student visa expires. Important: for applications made on or after 1 January 2027, Bachelor’s and Masters graduates will receive 18 months instead of 2 years. IMFS confirms the exact rules applicable to your specific intake date during counselling.
The UK Student Visa application fee is £524 (standard service). In addition, you must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) — at the discounted student rate of £776 per year of your visa duration. A 1-year Masters course typically results in a total IHS of £1,164 (1 year + 6 extra months on the visa). A 3-year Bachelor’s is approximately £2,716. You must also show maintenance funds: £1,529/month in London or £1,171/month outside London for up to 9 months, held for 28+ consecutive days. IMFS prepares and reviews your complete visa documentation package.
Yes — up to 20 hours per week during term time for degree-level students at licensed institutions, and full-time during official university holidays. Self-employment and freelance work are not permitted on a student visa. Employers must verify your right to work using your digital e-Visa share code. After graduation, the Graduate Route visa allows unlimited work rights (any employer, any role) for 2 years (or 18 months from Jan 2027 for new applications).
The UK does not require separate private health insurance for student visa holders. Instead, you pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) — £776 per year at the student rate — as part of your visa application. This grants you access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) for GP visits, hospital treatment, and most healthcare services, on the same basis as UK residents. You must pay the IHS even if you have private health insurance, as it is a mandatory visa requirement.
Yes — there are several major scholarships for Indian students. The Chevening Scholarship offers fully-funded 1-year Masters (apply in November each year). The GREAT Scholarship provides £10,000 minimum per student at 25+ partner universities. Commonwealth Scholarships cover full tuition and stipend for PhD and Masters. Most UK universities also offer merit-based awards of £2,000–£10,000+. IMFS has secured $15M+ in scholarships for students — our counsellors identify scholarships specific to your university shortlist and help you build a scholarship-ready application.
Since January 2024, only PhD or research-level students (and government-sponsored scholarship holders) can bring dependants (spouse/partner and children) to the UK under the Student Route. Taught Masters students and Bachelor’s students cannot bring dependants to the UK. This is an important consideration when planning your studies. IMFS counsellors address this at the planning stage so there are no surprises.
