Germany has emerged as one of the most sought-after study destinations for Indian students — and the reason is simple: you get world-class education at a fraction of the cost of the USA, UK, or Australia. Public universities charge no tuition fees, and graduates are highly sought after by European and global employers. If you’re comparing destinations, see our 2026–27 study destination comparison guide.
Most public universities charge no tuition — you only pay a semester contribution of €150–€430. Note: Baden-Württemberg state and select TUM programs charge non-EU students up to €1,500/semester extra.
TU Munich, LMU Munich, Heidelberg, and RWTH Aachen are consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities for engineering, science, and research.
An 18-month post-study job-seeker visa lets you find employment in Germany. A German degree is recognized across all 27 EU countries, opening doors continent-wide.
Germany is home to BMW, Siemens, Bosch, SAP, and Volkswagen. Engineering and STEM graduates have excellent internship and placement opportunities right from university.
Over 1,500 English-taught Master’s programs are available across German universities — no German language required for most postgraduate courses.
Monthly living costs in Germany average €800–€1,200, much lower than the UK, USA, or Australia. Student accommodation, subsidized canteens (Mensa), and transit passes help keep costs down.

⚠️ Mandatory: APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) verification is compulsory for ALL Indian students applying to German universities. No German university will process your application without it. Start this process as early as possible — it takes 4–8 weeks.
APS is an academic evaluation service run by the German Embassy in New Delhi and the German Consulate in Chennai. It verifies the authenticity of your Indian academic certificates before you apply to German universities. It was made mandatory for Indian students in 2007 after concerns about document fraud.
Create an account at aps-india.de and fill your application form with all academic details.
All original academic documents + self-attested copies, passport copy, APS fee payment proof (₹18,000–₹22,000), and the completed application form.
Most applicants are called for a 15–30 minute interview at the German Embassy in New Delhi or Consulate in Chennai, Kolkata, or Mumbai. The interview tests subject knowledge and language basics.
After verification and interview, you receive the APS Certificate (usually 2–4 weeks post interview). This certificate is valid for life and does not expire.
⏱️ Processing time: 4–8 weeks from document submission. Plan accordingly — this is your first step.
Indian students need a National Visa (Type D) for long-term study in Germany. This visa is issued for the duration of your study program and allows you to enter Germany and then convert it to a residence permit on arrival.
Book your visa appointment online at the German Consulate in your nearest city (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore).
Bring all original documents + copies. Biometrics are taken at the appointment. Be prepared to answer questions about your study plans.
Processing typically takes 4–12 weeks. Avoid booking non-refundable flights until the visa is issued.
Once received, book your flights and accommodation. After arriving in Germany, register at the local citizens’ office (Einwohnermeldeamt) within 14 days.
A blocked account is a mandatory requirement for your Germany student visa. It proves you can financially support yourself during your studies. The German government requires you to deposit €11,208 per year (€934/month) before applying for the visa.
Most popular provider for Indian students. Setup fee: ~€89. Fast online process. Works with DKB Bank. Recognized by all German consulates.
Competitive option with bundled health insurance packages. Setup fee: ~€89. Good customer support for Indian students.
Newer provider offering competitive fees and quick setup. Suitable for students who need fast processing before visa appointment.
Traditional bank option — longer setup time (4–6 weeks), may require in-person visits. Not recommended if you’re short on time.
💡 How it works: You transfer €11,208 into the blocked account before your visa application. After arriving in Germany, the account releases €934 per month to your German bank account automatically. You get the full amount back if your visa is rejected.
Germany has one of the most student-friendly work policies in Europe. You can work part-time without a special work permit as long as you stay within the allowed limits. Use our CGPA to percentage calculator to check your eligibility scores.

Mostly yes — most public universities in Germany charge no tuition fees for Indian students. You pay a semester contribution of €150–€430 that often includes a city transport pass. Two exceptions to know: (1) Universities in Baden-Württemberg state (Stuttgart, KIT, Heidelberg, Freiburg) charge non-EU students €1,500/semester extra. (2) TUM now charges non-EU students €1,500–€6,000/semester for select master’s programs. Outside these cases, Germany remains one of the most affordable study destinations in the world — far cheaper than the USA or UK.
APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) is an academic evaluation certificate mandatory for all Indian students applying to German universities. You apply through the German Embassy’s APS India portal, submit your academic documents, attend an interview (at the German Embassy/Consulate), and receive the certificate within 4–8 weeks. The fee is approximately ₹18,000–₹22,000. IMFS can guide you through the entire APS process.
From 2024, you must deposit €11,208 per year (€934 per month) in a blocked account (Sperrkonto) before applying for your student visa. This money is released to you monthly after you arrive in Germany. If your visa is rejected, the full amount is returned. Fintiba and Expatrio are the most popular providers for Indian students.
For English-taught programs (most postgraduate courses), you do not need German. However, A2/B1 German is highly recommended for daily life, part-time jobs, and career prospects. For German-taught programs and undergraduate studies, you need TestDaF Level 4 or DSH Level 2 (B2/C1). IMFS recommends starting German language classes (Goethe Institut A1/A2) alongside your application process.
uni-assist is a centralized application portal used by many German universities to process applications from international students. You upload your documents once on uni-assist and apply to multiple universities. The first application costs €75, and each additional university costs €30. Not all German universities use uni-assist — some have direct application portals. IMFS will identify which application route to use for your shortlisted universities.
Yes, but options are more limited. Fachhochschulen (Universities of Applied Sciences) generally have more flexible entry requirements than research universities. A GPA of 55–60% (6.5–7 CGPA) is often acceptable. Active backlogs may be a concern — contact IMFS for an individual assessment. Some foundation programs (Studienkolleg) also provide alternate entry pathways.
Germany student visa processing typically takes 4–12 weeks from the date of the appointment at the German Consulate. During peak seasons (June–August), it may take longer. Book your appointment as soon as you have your admission letter and blocked account confirmation. Do not book non-refundable flights until the visa is in hand.
