IMFS has been coaching students for IELTS since 1997 — as part of our integrated test prep and study abroad consultancy. What sets us apart is that your IELTS preparation at IMFS is directly connected to your university or immigration destination. We don’t just coach you to pass IELTS — we coach you to the exact band score your specific program or visa requires.
Our IELTS faculty includes specialists for each of the four sections: dedicated Speaking coaches for mock examiner-style interviews, Writing mentors who review every task with detailed feedback, and Listening and Reading strategists who teach you to maximise accuracy under time pressure.
🎯 IMFS IELTS achievers: Our students have consistently achieved Band 8 and above — including Band 8.5 by Suryawardhan and Band 8.0 by Ira Sahasrabudhe and Hemanth Ponnapatti. Free mock test and personalised feedback available at all 13 branches.

The format is identical regardless of which provider you choose, and both paper-based and computer-based versions test the same content at the same difficulty.
| Section | Tasks / Questions | Time | What’s Tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 4 sections · 40 questions Multiple choice, matching, completion | 30 min + 10 min transfer | Understanding spoken English — conversations, monologues, lectures |
| Reading | 3 passages · 40 questions Academic: complex texts · General: everyday texts | 60 min | Comprehension, inference, identifying writer’s views |
| Writing | Task 1 (150+ words) + Task 2 (250+ words) Academic: data/chart + essay · General: letter + essay | 60 min | Coherent writing, grammar, vocabulary, task achievement |
| Speaking | 3 parts · Face-to-face with examiner Introduction → Individual topic → Discussion | 11–14 min | Fluency, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation |
| Total | 4 sections | ~2 hrs 45 min | Score: Band 0–9 (0.5 increments) · Valid: 2 years |
📌 2026 Updates: (1) One Skill Retake — retake just one section if needed (computer-based only). (2) Writing template detection is now active — avoid memorised phrases like “in a nutshell” or “in today’s modern era”. (3) Paper-based tests now require a black ballpoint pen — pencils no longer permitted. (4) Computer-based IELTS results in 2–5 days vs 7 days for paper.
The Listening and Speaking sections are identical in both. Reading and Writing tasks differ. Choosing the right module is critical — most universities require Academic; migration and work visas require General Training.
💡 Not sure which to take? If you’re planning to study at a university abroad — take IELTS Academic. If you’re applying for a work visa or PR — take IELTS General Training. IMFS counsellors will confirm the right module based on your specific destination and program.
Your overall IELTS band score is the average of all four sections, rounded to the nearest 0.5. Requirements vary by destination and program — always verify with your specific university or visa authority.
| Destination | Minimum Band (Study) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 🇬🇧 UK | UG: 6.0–6.5 · PG: 6.5+ | Some programs require no band below 5.5 or 6.0 |
| 🇺🇸 USA | 6.0–7.0 | Varies by university — top programs often require 7.0+ |
| 🇨🇦 Canada | 6.0 overall | No band below 5.5 for study visas |
| 🇦🇺 Australia | 6.0–7.0 | Nursing/Medicine require 7.0+ in each section |
| 🇳🇿 New Zealand | 6.0–6.5 | Study permit requires 5.5 minimum |
| 🇩🇪 Germany | 6.0–7.0 | English-taught programs — TU Munich, RWTH Aachen require 6.5–7.0 |
| 🇮🇪 Ireland | 6.0–6.5 | Most programs accept 6.0 overall |
🎓 What your band means: Band 9 = Expert · Band 8 = Very Good · Band 7 = Good · Band 6 = Competent · Band 5 = Modest. Most top universities require Band 6.5–7.0. IMFS students regularly achieve Band 7+ with structured coaching — and our top scorers have reached Band 8.5.
The biggest IELTS change in recent years. If you scored well in three sections but missed your target in one, you no longer need to retake the entire exam.
Take the full IELTS first. If you need to improve just one section — Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking — you can retake that section alone within 60 days. Results in 3–5 days. Available for computer-based IELTS only.
After One Skill Retake, you receive a new Test Report Form showing your improved score alongside original scores in the other three sections. You can choose which TRF to submit to universities or immigration authorities.
IMFS coaches students specifically for One Skill Retake — identifying the exact gap section, building a targeted 2–4 week prep plan, and conducting section-specific mock practice. We’ve guided students from Band 6.0 to 7.0 in a single retake.
⚠️ One Skill Retake is only available for computer-based IELTS. If you’re planning to use this option, make sure to book the computer-delivered test from the start. IMFS will advise on the optimal strategy based on your section-wise mock test results.
From your first free diagnostic test to your visa interview — IMFS covers every stage.
Your coaching begins with a free, full-length IMFS mock IELTS. Get section-wise scores, identify exactly which bands you’re losing in each skill, and receive a personalised prep plan before spending anything on coaching.
IMFS conducts examiner-style mock Speaking sessions — Part 1 (introduction), Part 2 (individual long turn), Part 3 (abstract discussion). Feedback covers fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation — the four official IELTS Speaking criteria.
Every Writing Task 1 and Task 2 you submit is reviewed by IMFS faculty with detailed, examiner-aligned feedback. Focus on coherence, task achievement, lexical range, and avoiding the 2026 template detection penalties.
Systematic listening practice with a focus on predicting answers from context, catching synonyms and paraphrasing, and using the 10-minute transfer time effectively. Regular timed practice under real exam conditions.
With 40 questions in 60 minutes, IMFS teaches question-first reading, skimming and scanning for specific information, and how to handle True/False/Not Given — the question type most students lose marks on.
IMFS provides targeted 2–4 week preparation for the IELTS One Skill Retake — section-specific coaching to close the gap between your current score and your target in a single focused retake attempt.
Key strategies our faculty teaches for each section — built from 27+ years of coaching experience and examiner insights.
Use the 30-second preview time before each section to read the questions and underline keywords. The audio rarely uses exact question wording — listen for synonyms and paraphrases. Write answers immediately. Use the 10-minute transfer time to check spelling and word limits.
Never read the full passage first. Read the question, identify the keyword, locate the paragraph, then answer. For True/False/Not Given — “Not Given” means the information is simply absent, not contradicted. This distinction alone can add 3–5 marks.
Spend 3 minutes planning: identify the main trend, 2–3 key features, and any notable exceptions. Never describe every data point — select, compare, and contrast. Avoid copying data labels word-for-word from the chart — paraphrase.
Examiners are actively trained to penalise memorised phrases. Avoid “in a nutshell”, “in today’s modern era”, “technology is developing day by day”. Write naturally. A clear argument structure — position, evidence, counter-argument, conclusion — is far more effective.
Fluency is assessed on how naturally you keep talking, not on perfect grammar. When you run out of things to say, use connectors — “What’s particularly interesting is…”, “Another aspect of this is…” — to extend your answer. Filler words (“umm”, “like”) hurt your fluency score more than grammatical errors.
