Bring all original documents + copies. Biometrics are taken at the appointment. Be prepared to answer questions about your study plans.

Processing typically takes 4–12 weeks. Avoid booking non-refundable flights until the visa is issued.

Blocked Account (Sperrkonto) — Complete Guide

A blocked account is a mandatory requirement for your Germany student visa. The German government requires you to deposit €11,904 per year (€992/month) before applying for the visa. Source: BAMF (bamf.de), 2026.

At 1 EUR = ₹108 (July 2026, SBI Forex), €11,904 equals approximately ₹12.9 lakh. Rates change daily — verify at IMFS before finalising your plan.

Frequently Asked Questions — Study in Germany

Mostly yes — most public universities in Germany charge no tuition fees. You pay a semester contribution of €150–€430 that often includes a city transport pass. Two exceptions: (1) Universities in Baden-Württemberg state (Stuttgart, KIT, Heidelberg, Freiburg) charge non-EU students €1,500/semester extra. (2) TUM charges non-EU students €1,500–€6,000/semester for select master's programs. Outside these cases, Germany remains one of the most affordable study destinations in the world. Source: DAAD (daad.de).
The APS Certificate is mandatory for all Indian students applying to German universities (since November 2022). It verifies your academic documents. You apply via aps-india.de, submit documents by post, and receive a digitally signed PDF certificate by email — valid for 3 years. There is no in-person interview since April 2023. Fee: ₹18,000. Processing: 3–4 weeks typically, 8–10 weeks in peak season. See our complete APS guide →
The dMAT (Digital Master Test) was announced on 29 June 2026 by APS India and g.a.s.t. It is mandatory as part of your APS documentation if your UG degree is in Engineering, Business, Commerce, Finance, Economics, or Management and you are applying for Summer Semester 2027 or later. Registration deadline: 15 September 2026. Test date: 26 September 2026. Fee: €150 (≈ ₹16,200). Winter 2026/27 applicants are NOT affected. Source: aps-india.de/dmat. See our complete dMAT guide →
You must deposit €11,904 per year (€992 per month) into a blocked account (Sperrkonto) before applying for your student visa. This is the 2026 BAMF requirement. At 1 EUR = ₹108 (July 2026), this equals approximately ₹12.9 lakh. The money is released monthly after you arrive in Germany. If your visa is rejected, the full amount is returned. Fintiba and Expatrio are the most popular providers for Indian students. Source: BAMF (bamf.de).
For English-taught programs (most postgraduate courses), you do not need German. However, German language (even A2–B1) is strongly recommended for daily life, part-time jobs, and PR timeline. For German-taught programs and undergraduate studies, you need TestDaF Level 4 or DSH Level 2 (B2/C1). German language proficiency also accelerates PR: B1 German enables PR in typically 21 months vs 27 months with A1. Source: BAMF (bamf.de). IMFS offers German Language coaching A1–B2 →
Yes, but options are more limited. Fachhochschulen (Universities of Applied Sciences) generally have more flexible entry requirements — a GPA of 55–60% (6.5–7 CGPA) is often acceptable. Active backlogs may be a concern. Some foundation programs (Studienkolleg) also provide alternate entry pathways. Contact IMFS for an individual assessment at any of our 10 active branches.
Germany student visa processing typically takes 4–12 weeks from the date of the consulate appointment. During peak seasons (June–August), it may take longer. Book your appointment as soon as you have your admission letter and blocked account confirmation. Do not book non-refundable flights until the visa is in hand.
IMFS provides end-to-end support: APS certificate guidance, dMAT preparation classes (starting August 2026 at all 10 branches), university shortlisting, SOP and LOR review, blocked account setup, visa documentation, and pre-departure orientation. 27+ years experience, 67,000+ students guided. Free consultation at any of our 10 active branches across Mumbai (Dadar, Thane, Borivali, Vashi), Pune (Shivajinagar), Hyderabad (Kukatpally, LB Nagar, Madhapur), Nellore, and Warangal. Book at imfs.co.in/contact-us/

For your degree — yes. Over 1,500 English-taught Master's programs are available at German universities, particularly in STEM, engineering, business, and computer science. At universities like TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, and FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, you can complete your entire degree without speaking a word of German. For undergraduate programs, however, German proficiency (TestDaF Level 4 or DSH-2, equivalent to B2/C1) is almost always required.

For daily life — it gets harder. Grocery shopping, public transport, government offices (Ausländerbehörde, Einwohnermeldeamt), landlords, and most part-time employers in Germany operate in German. Students without any German typically find their first few months significantly more challenging.

For your career and PR — German is not optional. Most German employers expect at least B1–B2 German for professional roles. More critically, your PR timeline is directly linked to your German level — B1 German enables PR in typically 21 months after employment, while A1 adds 6 months. Without B1 German, your long-term settlement in Germany becomes significantly harder.

IMFS recommendation: Start German at A1 before you leave India — even 3 months of preparation makes a measurable difference. See our German Language Prep (A1–B2) →
