Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from students and parents about entrance exams after 12th — and the study abroad alternative.

There is no single “best” exam — it depends entirely on your stream and career goal. JEE Main is the best for engineering (NITs/IIITs), JEE Advanced for IITs, NEET-UG for medical (MBBS/BDS), CUET (UG) for central university admissions across multiple streams, and CLAT for law (NLUs). Students should shortlist 3–5 exams relevant to their career field rather than attempting all of them.

Yes — most students appear for 3–5 exams: one national exam (JEE/NEET/CLAT), one state CET as backup, one or two university-specific exams (BITSAT, VITEEE), and CUET if applicable. Manage your exam calendar carefully to avoid date clashes, and prioritise prep time toward your most important exam. Spreading effort across too many exams can hurt performance in all of them.

CUET (UG) is now the standard route for most UG admissions at central universities including DU, BHU, JNU, Hyderabad Central University, and many others. However, not all programs at all universities use CUET — some programs still have their own selection processes. Always check the specific university’s admission requirements for your target program.

JEE Main is the qualifying exam for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs — and is also the gateway to JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced is only for admission to the 23 IITs and is only accessible to those who clear JEE Main with a sufficiently high rank (the cut-off varies by category and year). JEE Advanced is significantly harder than JEE Main in both difficulty and competition.

The Parallel Plan means keeping a strong global university option open alongside your Indian entrance exam preparation — not instead of it. For example: a student preparing for JEE also applies to a BTech program in Germany (tuition-free at public universities) or an engineering program in Canada. The benefits: (1) Reduced anxiety — knowing you have a real alternative reduces exam-day pressure, often improving performance; (2) A genuine career alternative if the exam result isn’t what was hoped; (3) Many global programs have application deadlines in Oct–Jan, which aligns with the Indian exam calendar. IMFS offers a free 30-minute session to map this out.

The cut-off for JEE Advanced eligibility changes every year based on the number of candidates and the difficulty of that session’s paper. Historically, the general category cut-off has ranged from 85–95 percentile, but you must verify the current year’s cut-off from the official NTA/JEE website. The top 2,50,000 candidates (across all categories) from JEE Main are eligible to sit for JEE Advanced.

Commerce students with Maths have strong options: IPMAT/JIPMAT for integrated management programs (IIM route), CUET (UG) for BBA/BCom at central universities, NPAT for NMIMS programs, SET for Symbiosis, and CA Foundation for the chartered accountancy route. For a detailed guide, see our Commerce Entrance Exams 2026 guide.

Yes — completely. Top universities in the USA, UK, Germany, Canada, and Australia admit students directly after Class 12 (10+2) based on board marks, English proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL/Duolingo), and sometimes SAT/ACT scores. JEE and NEET are India-specific entrance exams that are not required or recognised for international university admissions. This is precisely why many students who are uncertain about JEE/NEET outcomes use the study abroad route as a parallel plan.

A practical approach for most students: 1 primary national exam (JEE/NEET/CLAT — depending on stream), 1 state CET backup, 1–2 university-specific exams (BITSAT, VITEEE, IPMAT etc.), and CUET if targeting central university programs. Beyond 4–5 exams, the preparation overlap starts causing diminishing returns. Prioritise your exam list based on your realistic target colleges, not FOMO.

Science students after 12th have excellent options abroad: Germany — public university tuition-free BTech/BSc (Ausbildung + degree pathways); UK — 3-year BSc/BEng at ranked universities; USA/Canada — 4-year BS programs with strong career outcomes; Australia — 3-year bachelor degrees with post-study work rights. Many of these routes lead to better career outcomes than mid-tier Indian engineering colleges, at comparable or lower total cost when scholarships are factored in.
