Canada has become one of the most sought-after study destinations for Indian students — and for good reason. It combines globally ranked universities with affordable tuition (compared to the USA and UK), strong post-study work rights, and one of the clearest pathways from a student visa to permanent residency anywhere in the world.
Canada has 10 universities in the QS World Top 300, including the University of Toronto, McGill, and UBC. All are fully accredited and globally recognised by employers.
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) lets you work anywhere in Canada for up to 3 years after graduation — a massive advantage for career building and PR applications.
Canadian tuition for Masters ranges from CAD 18,000–45,000/year — roughly 40–60% of the cost of equivalent programs in the USA. Living costs are also lower than major US cities.
Canadian graduates can apply for Permanent Residency through Express Entry (CEC) and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP). Canada actively recruits international graduates as future citizens.
Canada ranks among the world’s most peaceful and inclusive nations. With a large Indian diaspora in cities like Toronto, Brampton, and Vancouver, Indian students adapt quickly.
From AI and Data Science to Business and Healthcare, Canadian universities offer cutting-edge programs co-designed with industry. Co-op programs embed paid work terms into your degree.
🎯 IMFS Tip: Canada is currently the #1 destination for Indian students seeking a combination of quality education, post-study work, and a PR pathway. 💡 IMFS Tip: University Masters programs give you a guaranteed 3-year PGWP and better PR points under Express Entry. PG Diplomas at colleges are faster and cheaper — but since November 2024, college students must be in an eligible field of study to qualify for PGWP. IMFS counsellors verify PGWP eligibility for your specific program before you apply — this is a critical step we build into every Canada counselling session.
Canadian universities excel in tech, business, and health sciences — which aligns well with the career goals of most Indian students. Here are the top program categories:
UWaterloo, UofT, SFU, and UBC are globally ranked for CS. AI, Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, and Software Engineering are the most in-demand specialisations.
Canada’s tech ecosystem — particularly in Toronto’s “Silicon Valley North” and Vancouver — creates strong industry demand for data professionals. Most programs include co-op placements.
Ivey (Western), Schulich (York), Rotman (UofT), and Desautels (McGill) rank among North America’s best MBA programs. Strong alumni networks across Canadian finance and consulting.
Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Chemical Engineering at UofT, UBC, and Waterloo command strong placement rates. Co-op programs integrate 12–20 months of paid industry experience.
Canada faces a healthcare shortage — making Nursing, Public Health, and Health Administration graduates highly employable. McMaster and UofT lead in health research.
Canada’s natural resource wealth and climate focus makes it a global leader in Environmental Studies, Renewable Energy, and Sustainable Business — a rapidly growing job market.
Canada has three main intakes. Unlike the USA which is predominantly Fall, Canada gives you more flexibility:
📅 Application Timeline: For September 2026 — start preparing now. Ideal timeline: IELTS/TOEFL by April, applications submitted by June–July, student visa by August. IMFS manages this entire timeline for you from Day 1.
Canada offers significantly better value than the USA or UK for equivalent quality programs. Here’s a realistic breakdown:
| Program Level | University (CAD/year) | College (CAD/year) | Approx. INR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor’s Degree | $20,000–35,000 | $12,000–18,000 | ₹12–21 lakhs |

| PhD | $8,000–20,000 | — | ₹5–12 lakhs |
| Expense | Toronto / Vancouver | Smaller Cities |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | CAD $1,200–2,000/month | CAD $700–1,200/month |
| Food & Groceries | CAD $400–600/month | CAD $300–500/month |
| Transport | CAD $120–150/month | CAD $80–120/month |
| Misc / Personal | CAD $200–400/month | CAD $150–300/month |
| Total Annual | ~CAD $23,000–37,000 | ~CAD $15,000–25,000 |
Indian students can offset living costs by working up to 24 hours/week during term and full-time during scheduled breaks — significantly reducing the financial burden.
📝 Note on IELTS vs TOEFL: Both are accepted. IMFS offers coaching for both — we’ll advise which is easier for your profile and timeline. IELTS Coaching → · TOEFL Coaching →
📊 Low GPA? Many Canadian colleges accept students with lower CGPAs if they have relevant work experience or strong SOPs. IMFS counsellors specialise in building strong applications for students with non-standard profiles.
The Canada student visa (Study Permit) is processed through IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada). Here’s the step-by-step process:
Apply to your chosen university or college and secure an official Letter of Acceptance (LOA). You need this before applying for the student visa.
As of September 1, 2025, you must demonstrate living expense funds of CAD $22,895 (for a single student, excluding tuition and travel) to be eligible for a study permit. This is updated annually by IRCC in line with Canada’s cost of living — always verify the current amount on canada.ca before applying. Accepted proofs include a GIC from a participating Canadian bank, bank statements (last 4 months), education loan letters, or a combination. Funds must be in addition to your first year’s tuition.
Submit your Study Permit application online through the IRCC portal. Required documents: LOA, GIC confirmation, IELTS/TOEFL scores, transcripts, passport, SOP, financial proof.
Most applicants need to give biometrics (fingerprints + photo) at a VAC (Visa Application Centre) in India. Book this appointment early — slots fill up fast.
Processing times vary — typically 4–12 weeks for Indian applicants in 2025–26. IMFS monitors your application status and advises on any additional documents requested.
Once you arrive in Canada, immigration officers issue your Study Permit at the port of entry. Apply for your Social Insurance Number (SIN) immediately — you need it to work legally.
🛂 IMFS Visa Success Rate: IMFS has a 99.8% visa success rate across all destinations including Canada. Our counsellors review your complete application package before submission to ensure nothing is missing or incorrectly documented.
As a Canadian study permit holder, you can work:
The PGWP is one of Canada’s biggest advantages for Indian students. After graduating from an eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI) program, you can apply for a PGWP:
⚠️ Important PGWP changes from November 1, 2024:
Field of study requirement: Students who submitted their study permit application on or after November 1, 2024 and are in a college, polytechnic, or non-degree university program must now graduate in an eligible field of study (aligned with Canada’s labour market needs) to qualify for a PGWP. This requirement does not apply to Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD graduates.
Language requirement: All PGWP applicants must now demonstrate language proficiency — CLB/IELTS 7 for university graduates, CLB/IELTS 5 for college graduates.
Public-private college programs: Students who began a public-private partnership college program on or after May 15, 2024 are not eligible for a PGWP.
IMFS counsellors will verify your specific program’s PGWP eligibility before you apply — this is a critical step we build into every Canada counselling session.
Canada actively recruits international graduates as permanent residents. Here are the main pathways:
After 1 year of skilled work experience in Canada (gained under PGWP), you can apply for PR via CEC under Express Entry. This is the fastest PR route — typically 6 months processing.
Provinces like Ontario, BC, and Alberta have dedicated streams for international graduates. PNPs often have lower Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score requirements than federal Express Entry.
If you have a job offer or work experience in a National Occupational Classification (NOC) TEER 0/1/2/3 role, you can apply directly via FSW regardless of where you studied.
🌟 Pro Tip: Choosing the right province to study and work in can significantly improve your PR chances. Some provinces (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick) have lower CRS thresholds and active graduation streams. IMFS counsellors can map your PR pathway from Day 1 of your application.
While Canada doesn’t have as many full scholarships as Germany, several merit-based opportunities exist for Indian students:
| Scholarship | Amount | Eligibility |
|---|---|---|
| Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships | CAD $50,000/year (3 years) | Doctoral students — academic excellence + leadership |
| Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship (UofT) | Full tuition + living (4 years) | Exceptional UG applicants with community leadership |
| Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) | CAD $10,000–$15,000 | Masters/PhD students at Ontario universities |
| UBC International Major Entrance Scholarship | CAD $40,000 (4 years) | Top undergraduate international applicants |
| McGill Entrance Scholarship | CAD $3,000–12,000 | Undergraduate — based on academic merit |
| University of Waterloo International Master’s Award | CAD $2,000–5,000 | Masters students — merit-based |
| IMFS-Assisted Merit Scholarships | Varies by institution | IMFS counsellors identify institution-specific scholarships for your profile |
💰 IMFS has secured $15M+ in scholarships for students. Our counsellors identify institution-specific scholarships, teaching assistantships, and bursaries that most students miss. Early applications (Nov–Dec for September intake) significantly improve scholarship chances.
